Student Volunteers

University and High School students volunteer here! Whether getting some fieldwork experience or connecting with your community, Detroit Friendship House provides the perfect environment to expand your horizons.

  • Madonna University Students have the opportunity to help in two categries. All students must complete the required software, food safety, and cultural competency trainings.

    Admin- Helping to register new clients to the food pantry. Recording client visits during food distribution.

    Food Pantry- Assisting clients during food distribution choose healthy foods. Promoting nutrtion programs and iniciatives to clients.

  • NHS students are welcome to volunteer here at Detroit Friendship House, please contact your school NHS Facilitator or use the Group volunteer form.

  • We work with Wayne State University, and University of Detroit Mercy internship programs to place students. If sou are interested in an internship at Detroit Friendship House please contact your school program director. We are happy to support Graduate students in thier journey.

  • Are you working on a group project or research related to the work we do at Detroit Friendship House? (food insecurity,Social Work, Nutriton/dietetics,Health) fill out the corporate/group volunteer form below.

Food Pantry

Want to fight food insecurity head-on? Join our pantry operations team, help them stock, sort, and distribute food, and get to know your community while welcoming pantry guests.

  • Get to know our community as an intake volunteer.

    You will have the opportunity to get to know our panty guests by being the first person to greet them at the door as you record their pantry visit in our software.

  • Get the behind the scenes expereince. Volunteers are needed to help receive our food trucks, take inventory, sort and organize pallets and boxes of food. Prepare food boxes for various food distribution events and programs.

Programs

Curious to learn more about your community? Our program initiatives, including data collection, surveying, and enrollment, offer a unique window into the diverse needs and interests of our community.

  • Help us to help us collect, record and conduct analysis of data for various reports.

  • We are looking for a Content Creator to write, create and publish various pieces of our ministerial work for social media, web pages, and newsletters.

    Plan, create, manage, and upload media on platforms.

  • Bi-lingual Talent wanted!

    We are looking for volunteers who can speak Banlga, Arabic, Ukrainian, and Bosnian.

    This voluntee will serve as the translator for programs that are in person andn online, assist in translating written communication.

  • Volunteers will help set up, register, and sign in participants on the event day. The hours are usually 5:30 to 7 pm, but volunteers are welcome to stay during the event.

  • Once a year, Slow Roll hosts a food drive for Detroit Friendship House. On that Monday evening (TBD), ten volunteers are needed to help receive food donations, register donors for the raffle, hand out giveaways, sign up participants to receive our newsletters, etc.

  • Kroger and Gleaners' joint collaborative event, Bringing Hope to the Table, is always held a weekend in January. Volunteers are needed on the Saturday and Sunday at each Kroger store assigned to Detroit Friendship House. Several shifts are set up throughout both days, and we generally use up to 30 volunteers.
