Community Garden Event & Seed Swap
Friends joined us for our first ever gardening event, planned and hosted by our Women’s Empowerment Group. Visitors tried out different activities throughout our pantry with the goal of teaching more neighbors about home gardening, native plants, and how it can support food independence at home. We shared seeds, donated by Gleaners Food Bank, and participants painted their own pots to take home. After a Gardening 101 lesson from Keep Growing Detroit, event attendees had everything they needed to get started!
We hosted this event with support from Detroit Office of Sustainability and their “Waste Warriors” grant. We tried to use as many recycled items as possible:
We turned leftover pallets from our grocery deliveries into planters and built an herb wall
Staff painted excess cardboard from food deliveries for our event signage
Our neighbors at AJ’s Tires donated old tires for a raised bed (no veggies! We only planted annuals in the tire-beds)
Some guests brought in clippings to teach other attendees how to propagate plants
It was a successful event and we now have a wonderful vegetable garden in our backyard! Please enjoy some photos from the event.
Our amazing team at DFH!!
Raised bed made with old tires - thanks to our neighbors at AJ’s Tire and Wheels!
Kids helped brighten our new herb wall
Thank you, Keep Growing Detroit, for a great lesson on home gardening!!
Guests swapped seeds and got a gift packet from Gleaners
The Women’s Empowerment Group hosted a native plant table, sharing different ways to use mulberries, elephant ear, crab apples, and more!
Our program partner, Solstice Art Therapy, led a pot painting session.
