Food Pantry

Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00pm-4:00 PM

Volunteers help to sort non-parishable food items using the SWAP system. (Serving Wellness at Food Pantries) is a system that helps categories food items in categories ranging from most healthiest to least healthiest. Volunteers are required to attend training session.

Food pantry volunteers also help clients choose healthy foods during thier pantry visit. Answer question about our food pantry. Recruit and enroll clients to various workshops and programs. This volunteer position welcomes bi-lingual volunteers.

Warehouse

Monday and Friday 11am-12noon

Do you have experience in logistics? Warehouse, Inventory maintenance? You are a perfect fit to help us on truck delivery days! Lend us a hand to move pallets of food in our warehouse and stock inventory according to LIFO/FIFO rules.

Volunteers: Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.  

DATA ENTRY

Client Intake/Registration- Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm-4pm, occational Wednesdays.

Help us record client visits in our software system, during food distribution hours. This position is ideal for volunteers who can commit to consistent hours of service. Volunteers for this position are required to attend trainings.

Client surveys and Cart Auditors – Schedule changes based on program needs.

Interact with clients in our food pantry, help collect surveys and conduct cart audits. 

Other ways to volunteer:

Marketing and Communications- Help us with various marketing activities like creating content for social media, designing promotional materials, managing email campaigns, supporting event planning, and potentially managing website updates

Translation services- Help us bride the language gap by helping us to translate flyers, forms and other documents. Serve as an interpretor during workshops. Bangla and Arabic speakig volunteers needed.

Holiday Events

Join our special Holiday events this season. Consider hosting a food or toy drive at your church or workplace to support those in need. You can also help by making Easter baskets, and volunteering during the event to bring joy to the community.

Bring hope to the table-Food Drive

Kroger and Gleaners' joint collaborative event, Bringing Hope to the Table, is always held a weekend in January. Volunteers are needed on the Saturday and Sunday at each Kroger store assigned to Detroit Friendship House. Several shifts are set up throughout both days, and we generally use up to 30 volunteers.

  • Hope on the Table (Kroger/Gleaners food drive)

  • Weekend Event-hosted off-site at Kroger location

  • Three shifts are available on Saturday and Sunday

  • Volunteer opportunity available after the event to sort and organize food recieved on site at DFH
